About Akron Art Museum

The Akron Art Museum pairs its 1899 Renaissance Revival post office building with the 2007 John S. and James L. Knight Building — the glass-and-steel "Crystal" that has become a downtown landmark in its own right.

The collection holds more than 5,000 works with strengths in contemporary painting and sculpture and twentieth-century photography, and the museum mounts roughly a dozen special exhibitions a year. Recent seasons have brought nationally touring shows that made Akron their only Midwest stop.

Thursday is the local's move: admission is free and the museum stays open until 9pm. The Bud and Susie Rogers Garden out front is free to visit any time and hosts outdoor installations and summer events.

Local tips

  • Go on Thursday — free admission and evening hours until 9pm.
  • Parking is easiest in the High/Market deck next door.
  • The museum store and garden don't require a ticket.
  • The building itself is half the experience — walk the full exterior before going in.
