About Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens

Stan Hywet — Old English for "stone quarry" — is the sixth-largest historic home open to the public in the United States. F.A. Seiberling, co-founder of Goodyear Tire & Rubber, built it between 1912 and 1915 as the family seat, and today the manor house, Gate Lodge, Corbin Conservatory and formal gardens are all open to tour.

The guided Manor House tour runs about 90 minutes and walks you through the Great Hall, Music Room and the family's private quarters. The Nooks & Crannies tour ventures into the back-of-house spaces and staff quarters. Outside, the English Garden, Birch Tree Allée and the lagoon are worth the visit on their own, especially in May when the gardens peak.

In late November and December the estate opens select evenings for Deck the Hall, when the manor is decorated and lit for the holidays — one of Akron's longest-running traditions.

Local tips

  • Handheld cameras are allowed; tripods, selfie sticks and drones are not.
  • Backpacks, umbrellas and strollers are not allowed inside the manor house.
  • The estate is closed in winter except for Deck the Hall evenings.
